Not only did the record go on to become the UK's biggest selling single of the year, but it also hit the top of the charts in 16 countries.

Debut album Whenever You Need Somebody subsequently sold 15 million copies worldwide, broke into the US Top 10 and won him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
