Founded in 1969, many years after the sport's original clubs, whose establishment dates back to the late 1800s, the San Diego Padres play in the National League's west division, winning the prestigious pennant in 1984 and 1998, although no World Series title followed. Their first effort was upset by the Detroit Tigers in a 4-1 defeat over the American League Central division team. The Padres faced possibly the world's most famous sports team and certainly one of the most successful, the New York Yankees, in the 1998 World Series. Becoming the Padres: Franciscan inspiration

The Padres' name was inspired by the minor league team that arrived in the city in 1936. Led by Ted Williams, who was 18 at the time, this team won the Pacific Coast League title in 1937. A native of San Diego, Williams went on to spend 19 years with the Boston Red Sox and become a prized Hall-of-Famer. The team adopted Padres, "fathers" in Spanish, as their name in reference to the Franciscans of Spain who were responsible for founding San Diego back in 1769. Becoming a Major League side in 1969, alongside the Kansas City Royals, Montreal Expos and Seattle Pilots, the name stuck, and the franchise's history in the big leagues began. They moved into their home stadium, Petco Park, in 2004, out of Qualcomm Stadium, which they shared with the Chargers before their move to LA.
