Types of international cricket games
If words such as ODI and T20 leave you boggled and confused, here's a quick primer regarding the three main forms cricket that may be played, especially on an international level. While we're all aware that the most intense (and thus most famous) form of cricket comes under as Test cricket, you may be surprised to find that a Test match usually lasts around 5 days, with a Test series usually referring to an entire month of cricket matches. ODI, standing for One Day International, in comparison stands as a much more forgiving affair with matches lasting a single day, between 6 and 9 hours to be precise. This leaves us with T20I (Twenty20 International), the shortest form of international cricket, whereby the teams are limited to 20 overs each. Unlike other sports with different rules, a country's cricket team can play in all three forms of the sport, making for versatile and well-adapted players, some of which may specialise in one form over another. As you can imagine, the differing paces leads to very different styles of play, with Test cricket standing as true tests of endurance, T20I seeing players pushed to their limits and ODI being a mixture of the two.
Most famous international cricket fixtures
Just as any sport, cricket is usually at it most heated when it's at the international level, with many of these rivalries and clashes, even earning their own names. Such is the case the legendary Ashes series, which bi-annually pits England and Australia against each other. A full on "festival" of sorts, the Ashes consists of 5 gruelling tests, along with a smattering of ODI and T20 games. Contended since the birth of cricket, the Ashes' ferocity saw a heavy resurgence in 2005. The year saw both teams really step up to the plate, making for a hard-fought series that saw fans glued to their screens. With the matches consistently attended by fans of both sides, the games are best experienced live with the atmosphere and tension standing as highlights.
Another legendary fixture comes in the form of the equally-old India-Pakistan fixture. With a viewership of almost one billion, the India vs Pakistan matchup has proved just as intense, both on and off the cricket field. With global politics and history forever stoking the rivalry between these two countries, it shouldn't come as a surprise that their cricket matches see both countries air their grievances. Needless to say, there are countless stories regarding the excitement these two teams provide, and tension is always a factor. From a technical point of view, Pakistan produces better bowlers, while India produces better batsman, making for exciting contests even without the history and politics.
While these two rivalries are certainly the most exciting, fixtures such as South Africa vs Australia, India vs Sri Lanka, New Zealand vs Australia shouldn't be discounted especially as these games all have their own back stories to be decided.
