Legendary musical performances at Reading Festival
Reading Festival was first held in 1962 in a rugby ground (Athletic Ground, Richmond) and was then called the National Jazz Festival, but its roots can be traced from the famous Beaulieu Jazz Festival in the 1950s. Jazz was the focal point before the festival expanded to include R&B, hard rock, progressive rock, new wave and other genres in the late '60s.
Since then, Reading Festival has hosted hundreds of brilliant performances down the years, with most top artists gracing the stage more than once across decades.
In the '60s, the main stage was host to the electric performances of The Who, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and Jeff Beck, while the '70s saw the emergence of the new line-up of The Faces (originally The Small Faces) with the addition of Ronnie Wood – who later joined The Rolling Stones – and Rod Stewart. Both came from the blues rock '60s band The Jeff Beck Group, and the Faces performed at the Reading Festival along with The Cure, The Police, Judas Priest, AC/DC, and Patti Smith.
At the height of a musical revolution, the legendary force behind the global phenomenon Live Aid and super group Band Aid, Bob Geldof performed with his band the Boomtown Rats and shared the stage with other notable musicians including Alice Cooper, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, and New Order. Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant performed in the '90s along with Metallica, The Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to name but a few.
