Dua Lipa: dream pop superstar announces 2018 UK tour dates, including concerts in London, Glasgow and Birmingham
Roping in Lana Del Rey collaborators Andrew Wyatt and Emile Haynie for her debut single "New Love", it's no surprise that Dua Lipa's music is often described as 'dark pop'. However, where Del Rey embraces the pop genre in full, Lipa leans towards hip hop, citing A$AP Rocky as one of her main influences. Her latest single "New Rules" has been her most well-received to date, becoming her first UK number one hit.
It's been a busy year for Dua Lipa. After supporting Bruno Mars on the North American leg of his 24K Magic World Tour, she returned to the UK in October 2017 for a string of dates before heading off to continental Europe. She then joined Coldplay on tour and headlined her own US dates throughout November, before rejoining Bruno Mars for dates in New Zealand. If all that wasn't enough, Dua will be back in the UK in April 2018 for five concerts in Dublin, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and London. Dua Lipa: from YouTube cover songs to global pop star
Overnight success is rare, and 22-year-old Dua Lipa has certainly put in the hard yards already; spending years developing her music before making it big. Born in London to Albanian parents, she took inspiration from her musician father, attending the Sylvia Young Theatre School before briefly moving to Kosovo. Upon returning to the UK in 2010, she worked as a model, before throwing herself into music full time, posting covers of her favourite songs on YouTube and SoundCloud.
Citing artists as varied as Nelly Furtado and Pink as her influences, the result is dreamy pop spliced with truthful lyrics and dance inspired beats. Quietly developing her online presence, Dua Lipa received praise for her edgy approach to classic pop when she dropped her first track "New Love" in 2015. Second single "Be the One" did even better, leading to a nomination for the BBC Sound of 2016. Floor filler "Hotter than Hell" was released in May 2016 and became one of the songs of the summer, while appearances at Lollapalooza and Glastonbury certainly did her growing reputation no harm.
Collaborations with Sean Paul and Martin Garrix followed, before Dua Lipa's self-titled debut studio album was released in June 2017. Its sixth single "New Rules" went on to become Dua's first number one in the UK and, in doing so, became the first song in almost two years by a female solo artist to reach the top in the UK, since "Hello" by Adele in 2015.
