The Human League: synthpop legends still going at it

Emerging from the ever popular Sheffield music scene in the '80s, electronic new wave group The Human League shot to fame with iconic track "Don't You Want Me" and became one of the first synth groups to secure a global hit. Innovatively bringing together infectious pop melodies and electronic synth rhythms, the band have nine albums of hit material under their belt and record sales north of 20 million after finding particular popularity in the US.

The Human League: back to the future as electronic music enjoys comeback

After a brief tenure as both the Future and Dead Daughter, synth duo Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh enlisted the vocal talents of Phil Oakey and took on their current moniker. After a couple of minor hits in the underground scene, their first full release Reproduction reached the top 20 of the UK charts.

However, tensions within the group led to the departure of the founding members, leaving Oakey to recruit additional singers. Enlisting schoolgirls Susanne Sulley and Joanne Catherall to add female vocals to the mix, the group were officially revamped. The new dynamic proved their making, with both "Love Action" and "Open Your Heart" reaching the top ten of the UK charts in 1981. The trio's real breakthrough however came later in the year with defining single "Don't You Want Me", catapulting them to success in the US too.

Third LP Dare performed well on both sides of the Atlantic, but despite a successful tour, the band withdrew from the spotlight until the release of Hysteria three years later. In 1985, they announced an indefinite hiatus, which was broken a year later for the release of Crash, which spawned the US number one hit "Human".

However, new wave synth was no longer in vogue by the '90s, meaning Romantic? and Octopus went largely unnoticed until a resurgence in the genre brought attention to their 2001 release Secrets. The trio played concerts throughout the 2000s, before joining ABC and Heaven 17 for The Steel City Tour to celebrate Sheffield's part in the electronic craze of the '80s.
