ZHU is one of the most exciting and intriguing new artists on the dance music scene, praised for his genre-defying sound. Don't miss the chance to see him live in London.
Following the success of his debut single "Faded," ZHU is travelling the world, with a series of shows lined up around Europe. He will be performing in Ibiza, Amsterdam, Paris and Brussels, and will play the Oval Space in London. The warehouse-style East London venue is popular with DJs and dance artists, and previous performers include Madeon, Andy C and Bondax.
Before he had his breakthrough hit with "Faded," ZHU released a track a week on Soundcloud for a whole year for his 52 to ZHU project. On many of the songs he collaborated with female singers. Although the tracks were well received, almost all of them have now been removed from the Internet, which gave ZHU a fresh start to relaunch his career in 2014.
ZHU is the artist name of Steven Zhu, a music producer and singer specialising in electro and house music. He is signed to the major record label Columbia and managed by Jake Udell, who also represents female dance duo Krewella. At first, ZHU kept his identity a secret, as he said he wanted to be judged on his music alone. Now we know that he is from the USA, and the Bay Area in particular. He studied at the Thornton School of Music, within the University of Southern California, and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. While his peers were into EDM music, he was experimenting with a different sound.
ZHU first caught attention of electronic music fans online in March 2014, with his mash-up of several songs by Outkast, titled "Moves Like Ms. Jackson." The song was premiered on Pete Tong's show on Radio 1. ZHU went on to release his debut EP The Nightday the following month, and "Faded" was released as his first official single soon after in May 2014. It became an international hit and reached the top 5 in the U.K. and Australia. The song also earned ZHU his first Grammy nomination, in the category of Best Dance Recording. He didn't win, but being nominated less than a year after his first chart success is very impressive.
ZHU has not released an album yet, but he has released two EPs. The first, "Introducing ZHU," is no longer available, but the second, "The Nightday," has been a success. "The Nightday" reached the top 10 in Australia, and received positive reviews. It was described as "a real stand out in the modern electronic revival."
ZHU uses lighting and sound effects to create a fun and unique live experience, which is important for any DJ. He performs behind a screen, so only his silhouette is seen, adding to the mystery surrounding his true identity.
