The Smashing Pumpkins Biography - Turmoil and Sonic Triumphs
Born after a chance meeting between soon-to-be lead singer Billy Corgan and guitarist James Iha at a Chicago record store, the band came together with the addition of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky. Together, the men began playing around area clubs, hawking a sonic style vaguely influenced by iconic '80s acts such as New Order. Yet, rather than defaulting to a derivative rock sound, the foursome was intent on infusing a harder, more modern edge into their music - an approach evident in their studio debut album, 1991's Gish. Amidst moderate success came a slew of personal problems, leading the band to relocate for the recording of their follow up, 1993's Siamese Dream. Debuting in the Billlboard Top 10, it paved the way for further success with what is largely considered their magnum opus: 1995's sprawling two-disc Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Drawing comparisons with Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Beatles' White Album, the era-defining effort went on to earn several Grammy Award nominations.
Weathering further iterations of both their stylistic pursuits and their line-up, the Pumpkins are one of the 1990s' strongest surviving rock outfits.
