The Libertines Biography
The two frontmen Pete Doherty and Carl Barat met when they were studying at university in London. Drawn together by a love of music and old books, the pair crafted the fictional world of Albion with their music. The band began playing gigs in venues like Filthy Macnasty's Whiskey Cafe in Islington where Doherty worked as a barman. After impressing with their songwriting prowess, the duo was signed to Rough Trade Records and aided in the production of their debut album Up the Bracket by Mick Jones of the Clash. The record is widely regarded one of the best albums of the noughties and won the Best New Band award at the NME Awards. Due to Pete Doherty's well publicised personal issues and tensions within the group, they split in 2004 after the release of their second self-titled album and lead single "'"Can't Stand Me Now". Barat went on to form Dirty Pretty Things while Doherty created Babyshambles, both finding success but not with the same cult following. Six years later the band would reunite for a headline slot at Reading and Leeds Festivals. By 2014 the band were back together again for a number of festivals and a year later, the band released their much anticipated third album Anthems for Doomed Youth. Fast forward, to 2017 and the band have never looked better, with the band finally finding that sought-after rhythm.
