The namesake of a French football team, the group was formed by former music journalists Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs in the in the late '80s. Moving to Camden, they started to produce demos and it didn't take long until they caught the attention of independent label Heavenly, who signed a deal with the duo.

With a highly conceptual approach to music, the pair initially planned on using a variety of singers on their album. However, after enlisting vocalist Sarah Cracknell for their debut Fox Base Alta they decided to keep her on as a permanent member and front figure. Lending the group a much-needed edge to their tunes, the Chelmsford singer soon became an important part of group's development.

The re-released single 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' found its way to the UK charts in 1991 and so the threesome's career began to skyrocket.
