Miles Kane: award-winning collaborator
The Rascals' support slot for Arctic Monkeys on tour in 2005 proved a seminal moment for respective frontmen Miles Kane and Alex Turner, who soon became close friends and began writing music together. In 2007, after Kane had featured as a guitarist on the Monkeys' second album Favourite Worst Nightmare, they began recording a debut LP together as a duo, appointing the London Metropolitan Orchestra to add string, brass and percussion arrangements to the tracks. The Age of Understatement went straight to the top of the UK charts upon its 2008 release, with the title track harking back to greats such as David Bowie and The Beatles' late 1960s prog rock era. Praised for steering clear from the sounds of each artist's respective groups, they were honoured with a nomination for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize, only to be beaten by Elbow's excellent LP The Seldom Seen Kid.
Despite press reports that the pair would immediately recommence work on new material, the pair waited until 2012 to confirm their intentions to work together again when the time felt right. In-between, Kane released his 2011 debut solo album Colour of the Trap (UK number 11) and second record Don't Forget Who You Are (UK number eight) in 2013.
Kane then supported the Arctic Monkeys once again at their Paris Olympia show - this time as a solo artist - joining Alex Turner later on stage to perform "Standing Next to Me", the second single from their debut album. They repeated the feat in 2014 as part of their Finsbury Park set before finally announcing plans to record their sophomore effort in 2015. Released the following year, Everything You've Come to Expect was another UK number chart topper and critical success. Kane's third album Coup de Grace was released in 2018.
