Born in Montevideo, Jorge Drexler has done wonders for the music scene in Uruguay. He won wide acclaim in 2004 after winning an Academy Award, becoming the first Uruguayan to do so. The award was achieved for composing a song from The Motorcycle Diaries called Al Otro Lado del Rio. This was not the only stand-out feature of the award. Sabina introduced Jorge Drexler to other important Spanish singers. This led him to record Vaiven, which is an album he released with Spanish musicians in 1996. He then moved to Spain and recorded another four albums. This includes Eco, which was released in 2004, and Sea, which he brought out in 2001. The other albums he recorded in Spain were Frontera, in 1999, and Llueve, in 1997.
His music is a combination of traditional music from Uruguay with electronic music, jazz music, pop, and bossa nova. This is what makes Drexler so special; his compositions are very personal, boasting original arrangements.
