Heracles Almelo was formed in 1903 in the eastern Netherlands city of Almelo. It was named after Heracles (often known in the West as Hercules), a hero of Greek mythology who incorporated great strength and also divine character, being the son of Zeus. Perhaps this name gave the club confidence because they went on to win the Netherlands' premier division in 1927 and 1941. Yet a long fallow period followed, in which the Heracles Almelo squad enjoyed success in the Eerste Divisie but couldn't reach a higher level. 2005 changed all that, however, when the club blasted back into the Eredivisie and, just over ten years later, even qualified for European football's 2016-2017 season.
