Since its foundation in 1965, FC Twente has played in both the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie of Dutch professional football. Despite having always shown promise, the club's real wins came in more recent years, particularly under the stewardship of Steve McClaren. Unlike some other Dutch football clubs, FC Twente has always been proudly international when it comes to its squad. Though former FC Twente players Claus Nielsen, Bryan Ruiz and Hakim Ziyech were among many others to make a name for themselves on the team, it was Swiss striker Blaise Nkufo who was crowned all-time top scorer of the club with a record 114 goals over six seasons. Nkufo's final season coincided with the introduction of an exciting new FC Twente manager, England's Steve McClaren, who proudly led the team to their first ever win of the Eredivisie in 2009-10. This set off a streak of successes that included the KNVB Beker in 2010-11 and two consecutive Johan Cruijff Schaals in 2010 and 2011. FC Twente has been at home in the spacious De Grolsch Veste stadium since 1998. Although mainly used for home games, the stadium has also hosted international football matches - fortunately, the Netherlands beat Japan 3-0 at the first of these in 2009. The club also has various satellite clubs, including the Netherlands' Go Ahead Eagles and Heracles Almelo who also, incidentally, are among the most important FC Twente rivals. While FC Twente fans can be assured that they'll get to support their team against Heracles Almelo at an annual derby game, more deep-seated emotions tend to come out at matches against Feyenoord or FC Groningen. Having been relegated from the Eredivisie at the end of the 2017-18 season, the FC Twente squad has all to play for in the coming years and will no doubt be trying its hardest to get back to the dizzying heights of Dutch football that it reached in 2011.
