Foreigner Biography - Juke Box Heroes Still Going Strong
Mick Jones started his career playing guitar on recordings for the likes of George Harrison and as part of hard rock group Spooky Tooth - but not the Clash, despite sharing his name with the London act's own axe man. He moved to New York in the mid '70s to start a group combining rock, R&B and pop into a single style - and the result was Foreigner. Bringing together saxophonist Ian McDonald, drummer Dennis Elliot, Al Greenwood, Ed Gagliardi and vocalist Lou Gramm, the group quickly gained success, signing with Atlantic Records. Jones and Gramm formed a collaborative songwriting partnership, with 'Cold as Ice' an early hit that helped their self-titled debut album go on to go five times platinum after its 1977 release. Their second LP Double Vision proved similarly popular the following year, remaining in the charts for six months, and spawning singles like 'Hot Blooded'. After third effort Head Games, the band's line-up changed for the first time but they shrugged off the loss of Gagliardi to bring out 4, adding power balladry to their classic hard rock sound in songs like 'Waiting for a Girl Like You'.
After disappearing from the spotlight for three years, their follow-up to 4, single 'I Want to Know What Love Is' became one of their defining hits. Fifth and sixth albums Agent Provocateur and Inside Information came out before lead singer Gramm left to pursue solo ambitions. However, after Unusual Heat in 1991 with Johnny Edwards on vocals, the original pairing reunited to issue hits collection The Very Best... And Beyond, continuing a successful relationship. Adding Bruce Turgon and Jeff Jacobs to the line-up, the band continued touring before Gramm was forced to retire for a number of years to recover from a brain tumour. Membership changes and compilation albums followed before they returned to the charts with Can't Slow Down in 2009, 15 years after previous studio album Mr. Moonlight. The past few years have seen Jones and Gramm inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and they celebrate 40 years in rock 'n' roll in 2016.
