A legacy of its own

You could say Finsbury Park has a somewhat contradictory history, known as a location for pacifist meetings during the First World War and used as a military training ground during the Second World War. Yet the park dates back even further. During the mid-18th century, the first tea room opened in the park, becoming a location for Londoners to escape the smog of the city centre - not so different from today! Development continued over the years as a lake, shooting and archery ranges, and a pub were built until eventually becoming an official park in 1869. After falling into dilapidation throughout the late 20th century, a £5 million Heritage Lottery Fund was made in 2003. The park now contains a running track, a soft ball field, tennis courts, multiple children's play areas and cafés.
