A few years ago, bearded balladeer Joshua Tillman was best known as the drummer of the indie group Fleet Foxes, but he has since established himself as a solo artist in his own right thanks to the mainstream successes of albums I Love You, Honeybear (2016) and Pure Comedy (2017).

His raw, confessional style of songwriting is laced with plenty of humour too, and the result is an intriguing and personal blend of blues, soul and folk. Born in a suburb of Washington DC, Joshua Tillman was raised in an Evangelical Christian household. Although he initially found the environment culturally oppressive, persuading his parents to allow him to listen to Bob Dylan records foreshadowed a career path. Soon, he was showing a keen aptitude in music, and he learned to play both the drums and guitar during childhood. After briefly attending university, he started recording songs while working as a baker, and soon released a number of solo albums under the name J. Tillman, including Cancer and Delirium and his 2006 debut album Minor Works.

Tillman went on to join indie legends Fleet Foxes as a drummer in 2008. However, after extensive touring of the band's eponymously titled debut and follow up Helplessness Blues, he elected to move on to once again focus on his solo career. Later that year, Tillman unveiled Fear Fun under the Father John Misty pseudonym, indicating a huge departure from his previous style. A heartfelt performance on US TV soon brought his music to the wider world, and when sophomore album I Love You, Honeybear was released in 2015, his fan base exploded. Widespread critical acclaim follwed for 2017 effort Pure Comedy, which saw the LP hailed as one of the best albums of the year by many publications.
