Stereophonics: Welsh rockers announce massive 2018 UK arena tour to support new album Scream Above The Sounds

Led by the gravelly-toned voice of Kelly Jones, the Stereophonics are, put simply, one of the biggest bands in rock history. Since their epic 1997 breakthrough Word Gets Around, the Welsh quartet have sold over 10 million records worldwide; headlined almost every major festival in the UK; and became the eighth group to achieve five consecutive UK number one albums in 2007 (after the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, ABBA, Genesis, Oasis, Blur and U2).

After again thrilling crowds with a brilliant set of classics and new material during their headline slot at this year's BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park, the band have announced a massive 2018 UK tour to support their forthcoming 10th studio album Shout Above The Sounds (due for release 3 November) and to mark two decades in the music business. 

The Welsh quartet will play 12 shows around the UK throughout February and March next year, including Manchester, London and Cardiff. They'll also stop at: Glasgow, Aberdeen, Nottingham, Brighton, Bournemouth, Leeds, Newcastle and Birmingham – meaning rock fans up and down the country will have a chance to see the Stereophonics live. Stereophonics: chart veterans still going strong

Growing up in the quaint Cynon Valley region in Wales, Kelly Jones, Richard Jones and Stuart Cable had dreams of starting a rock band after finding inspiration in legendary '70s acts like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. Taking their name from an antique radio manufacturer, the boys began playing gigs in their local area and it wasn't long before they attracted the attention of label heads – most significantly, the bosses at Richard Branson's V2, who promptly signed them. They released debut album Word Gets Around in 1997, and went straight into the UK charts at number six – before claiming the Best New Band prize at the 1998 BRIT Awards.

In 1999, Jones and co. brought out second album Performance and Cocktails, which gave them their first number one record, with the appeal of catchy singles "The Bartender and the Thief" and "Just Looking" marking them out as one of the most distinctive rock bands to emerge in recent years. Years of mainstream success followed, with hits including "Have a Nice Day" and a distinctive cover of Rod Stewart's seminal track "Handbags and Gladrags" coming from four more number one albums: Just Enough Education to Perform, You Gotta Go There to Come Back, Language. Sex. Violence. Other? and Pull the Pin. In 2007, guitarist Adam Zindani joined to make the trio a quartet, adding another layer to their sound on Keep Calm and Carry On, Graffiti on the Train and 2015's Keep the Village Alive. 

"It’s a pretty big sounding record, as in it’s pretty anthemic," frontman Kelly Jones says of forthcoming 10th album Scream Above The Sounds.

"It’s got a lot of different sounds, it’s a very contemporary-sounding record. It sounds like us doing whatever it is we do in our 20th year. There are ten songs on the album and they all sound different from each other, it’s just exciting to bring out some new music and play some new music."
