Bloc Party - The Rebirth Of A Seminal British Band

Formed at Reading Festival in 1999, this London-based quartet burst onto the British music scene during the mid-2000s indie rock boom, when the likes of The Libertines, Maximo Park and Arctic Monkeys were storming the charts. Boasting a beguiling brand of art rock, the band's punk inflected percussive tracks 'Helicopter' and 'Banquet' quickly gathered a cult following, and soon their Gang of Four-inspired music was being trumpeted by Franz Ferdinand and Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq. In 2005, their platinum-selling debut album Silent Alarm hit number three in the album charts, cementing them as one of Britain's most talked about new bands and earning them NME's Album of the Year Award.

Their darker, more complex 2007 sophomore record A Weekend in the City helped the band crack the US market, with their follow-up efforts Intimacy and Four hitting the shelves in 2008 and 2012. By this point, Bloc Party were considered among the rock scene's most important players, and the ambiguous and intelligent nature of their lyrics helped to separate them from the rest of the crowd. Following a challenging period of readjustment, Bloc Party are back with a new line-up and fresh focus. Fifth album Hymns, released in January 2016, is crammed with eclectic and surprisingly spiritual new tracks. Lead single 'The Love Within' showed that their evolution has been a total triumph, and the quality is replicated across the LP in tracks such as 'Exes', 'Eden' and 'The Good News'.
