Amon Amarth's name references J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings. In Tolkien's elaborate mythology, Amon Amarth is the name the immortal elves gave Mount Doom, where Frodo must destroy the Ring. The band's songs are also peppered with references to Tolkien's world and Norse mythology. The song "Guardians of Asgaard," for instance, references the home world of the gods in the Nine Worlds of the Viking Gods.

Band/Singer

Amon Amarth formed in 1992 in Tumba, Sweden following the break up of the band Scum, which shared many of the same members. The current lineup comprises Johan Hegg on lead vocals, Olavi Mikkonen on lead guitar, Ted Lundström on bass, Johan Söderberg playing rhythm guitar, and Fredrik Andersson holding it down on drums.

The same year, Amon Amarth embarked on their first international tour alongside established metal bands Deicide, Burial Truth, and Six Feet Under. Hit Albums

Following the successful first album, Amon Amarth began releasing LPs at a steady clip. Sophomore effort The Avenger, released in 1999, was followed two years later by The Crusher. The 2002 release Versus The World revived the band's interest in fantasy, this time based around the Nine Worlds of the Norse myths, which was revisited in the 2006 album With Oden On Our Side and the 2008 release Twilight of the Thunder Gods.
