The People's Artist of Chechnya

Born in the Georgian city of Batumi in 1965, Valery Meladze studied Mechanical Engineering at Ukraine's Nikolayev Shipbuilding Institute while pursuing his musical ambitions. Following a four-year stint as the frontman of Soviet Union outfit Dialog, Meladze launched his solo career in 1993 with the single ‘Ne Trevoz Mne Dushu Skripka' and two years later released his debut album, ‘Sera'. Following 1996 sophomore ‘Posledniy Romantik', he recorded a live album at the Olympik Moscow, reinvented himself on 1998's ‘Samba Belogo Motylka' and scored several Russian chart-toppers with 1999's ‘Vsyo Tak I Bylo'. In 2000, he joined forces once again with his brother and long-time collaborator Konstantin to help form Ukrainian-Russian pop band VIA Gra. Three years later, he resumed his own recording career with ‘Nega' and went on to pick up two nominations at the MTV Russia Music Awards, receive the prestigious Meritorious Artist of Russia, and be crowned the People's Artist of Chechnya.
