Tom Odell: two hit albums and multiple awards
Despite starting to write songs at the age of 13, the aspiring musician didn't begin performing full time until he was in his early 20s for fear his music might be deemed 'uncool'. After a brief stint playing as part of band Tom and the Tides, he went solo, eventually being spotted by In the Name Of at Columbia Records following extensive gigging in London. By 2012 he had both released the Songs From Another Love EP and performed live on Later... With Jools Holland – a performance that helped the star on his way to being nominated for the BBC Sound of 2013. By the year's end, he'd hit number one in the charts with debut album Long Way Down, and won the Critics' Choice prize at the BRIT Awards.
In 2014, he was named songwriter of the year at the Ivor Novello Awards, and his cover of Beatles' track "Real Love" was a huge hit after featuring in the John Lewis Christmas advert. Returning to the studio and spending time in both New York and LA, he began working on his sophomore effort, Wrong Crowd – a cinematic affair that hit number 2 in the UK charts.
