Since their founding in the late 1970s in Orange County, Calif., Social Distortion has presented a powerful punk sound variously venturing into the realms of rock, country and honky tonk. The band's records have been relatively few and far between, given their four-plus decades longevity (minus a mid-1980s hiatus), but all the while, Social Distortion's fans have relished in frequent and dynamic live shows led by frontman Mike Ness. The latest Social Distortion tour draws on a back catalogue eight studio albums strong and is sure to feature such hits and fan favourites as "Story of My Life," "Ring of Fire" and "I Was Wrong." The band continues to prove why they are one of the best-selling punk acts of all time.

Social Distortion's background

Social Distortion was founded in 1978 in Fullerton, Calif. by singer-songwriter Mike Ness, who today is the group's only remaining original member. The band's early sound was strongly influenced by U.K. acts including the Sex Pistols and Rolling Stones, but they would soon become one of the defining pioneers of the Orange County punk movement of the mid-1980s.

Social Distortion released their debut single, "Mainliner/Playpen," in 1981, and in 1982 embarked upon their first international tour with Youth Brigade. The band's debut album, 1983's Mommy's Little Monster, gained them wider recognition, as did their second album, Prison Bound, released in 1988. Social Distortion's breakthrough into mainstream success came with their third album, 1990's Social Distortion, which yielded some of their best-known singles: "Ball and Chain," "Story of My Life" and a cover of "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash. The album went on to be certified gold.

Social Distortion scored another gold album with their fourth full-length offering, 1992's Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell. That record also gave them another two hit singles with "Bad Luck" and "When She Begins." A harder sound was revealed on 1996's White Light, White Heat, White Trash. The song "I Was Wrong" off the album generated considerable radio play for the band. A live album, Live at the Roxy, followed in 1998.

In this century, Social Distortion have given their fans the 2004 album Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll and a Greatest Hits compilation in 2007. After numerous delays, although touring throughout the interim, Social Distortion released Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes in early 2011. Its sound marked a return to the band's early punk origins. In 2015, Social Distortion went on tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their self-titled album.
