Brought up in a musical family, the budding singer picked up piano at the tender age of six. It didn't take long until he was on tour aged just 13, with family group The McGarrigle Sisters and Family. His eponymous debut album received unanimous critical acclaim, including four nominations from the Gay and Lesbian American Music Awards and a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album.
Inspired by powerful female singers like Edith Piaf and Judy Garland, the vocalist's soaring melodies and heartfelt, confessional lyrics helped him stand out from the crowd.
