The young Springsteen was first enchanted by music after watching Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. After buying a guitar, he soon joined his first band, The Castiles, before moving on to hard rock act Earth. After unsuccessful stints in various other groups, the singer found himself broke - and decided to pursue a solo career in New York. He soon acquired a manager who helped to sign him to renowned record label Columbia Records in 1972. In need of backing musicians, he created the foundation for what would become the E Street Band.

Despite acquiring an impressive underground following over first two albums Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, the boss and his band only found their major breakthrough with 1975's Born to Run, which went platinum in both the UK and US.
