Pat Metheny Biography - Grammy-Winning Guitarist
This Missouri performer demonstrated his musical excellence from a young age, winning a scholarship to jazz camp at the age of 15 and taking tutelage under guitarist Attila Zoller. He garnered a reputation as a teenage prodigy, taking up a teaching post with the Berklee College of Music. He made his wider debut after joining Gary Burton's band in 1975 and it didn't take long for the younger guitarist to write enough material to record his debut album, Bright Size Life.
After working with pianist Lyle Mays on 1977's Watercolours, the two began to forge a partnership lasting over 25 years that would see the formation of the Pat Metheny Group. Their second album, American Garage, proved to be the key to the group's success, topping the Billboard Jazz chart and breaking into mainstream pop charts thanks to the signature song, '(Cross the) Heartland'. Now one of the biggest names in jazz, this artist finds it hard to stay away from the live circuit, having performed hundreds of gigs every year for the last three decades. His prosperous career has seen him collaborate with the likes of Steve Reich, Joni Mitchell, Santana and Jaco Pastorius.
