Of Monsters and Men Biography - Iceland's Alt Folk Heroes
The group formed when lead singer Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdottir looked to create a side project to her solo act, Songbird. After enlisting co-singer and guitarist RagnarThorhallsson, bassist Kristjan Pall Kristjansson and drummer Arnar Rosenkranz Hilmarsson the band was complete. The group then went on the win a battle of the bands competition in Iceland known as the Musiktilraunir festival in 2010 which then earned them a spot at the famous Iceland Airways Festival. Following this success, the band were quickly signed to the ingeniously named Record Records in 2011 and began to record material straight away. Off the back of their debut album My Head is an Animal, hit single 'Little Talks' instantly received airplay and went nationwide in the USA, resulting in the group signing with label Universal and earning global acclaim.
The band returned with their Sophomore album Beneath the Skin in 2015,having taken a completely different direction. Leaving behind the upbeat harmonies of their first album, their new sombre and synth infused sound marries subtle lyrics with reflective instrumental layers to create something entirely unique. With dream-like tracks such as 'Crystals' and the powerful 'Thousand Eyes' the group are pushing boundaries, putting on world class performances and performing at the biggest venues across the globe.
