New Model Army Biography - Politics, Religion and punk rock

Powered by a love of punk rock and Northern soul, three Bradford-born musicians decided to form a stripped back three-piece in 1980. Frontman and singer-songwriter Justin Sullivan grew up as a Quaker with a literary education, penning songs that didn't blend in with the popular New Romantic scene. The band were ignored by record labels for years but managed to gain cult status through exhaustive live tours and anti-anthems like 'Vengeance' and 'Great Expectations'.

They were finally recognised as the leading post-punk band in the UK in 1984 by the producer of high-profile music TV show, The Tube. After an electric live televised performance where a few dozen faithful fans invaded the studio, they went on to achieve musical greatness, knocking The Smiths off the top of the UK Indie Chart with their debut Vengeance. Over the following years they appeared on Top of the Pops wearing controversial slogan t-shirts, hit the Top 40 with singles like 'Vagabond' and released a catalogue of bestselling albums such as Thunder and Consolation and Impurity.
