Nek: an astounding multilingual pop star

  Born in 1978, Filippo Neviana rose to become one of Italy’s most successful pop musicians. Even before his tenth birthday he was already playing a variety of different instruments, and after playing with several bands in his youth he launched his solo career with a performance at the Castrocaro Music Festival in 1991. Known professionally as Nek, he has put out more than a dozen studio albums and over 45 singles, many of which were huge hits. Although often singing in his native tongue, he also tends to release Spanish versions of his songs and albums, which has led to him being very successful in Spanish-speaking countries. Even in Italian, though, his songs have universal appeal, highlighted by the fact that he has charted in most European countries a number of times.   Nek’s breakthrough came in 1997 when he performed at the Sanremo Music Festival. His song "Laura non c’e" (also released in Spanish as "Laura no está") was his first big hit – a huge success in Italy as well as across Europe and Latin America. His albums and singles have sold millions of copies. "Lei, gli imici e tutto il resto" achieved six-time Platinum status in Italy, and "In due" went Platinum in Spain and Italy, and Gold in many other European countries. In later years his music has topped download charts, such as the 2007 album that he recorded with the band El Sueño de Morfeo entitled "Para ti sería", which peaked at Number One on the Spanish download charts and stayed there for over three months. Unsurprisingly for a musician of this calibre, he has collaborated with many fantastic musicians, including Craig David and L’Aura. He’s also the recipient of a multitude of awards and has toured extensively, playing at the famous Live 8 festival, as well as Reventon Super Estrella, La Mercè Festival and the Sanremo Music Festival.
