Levellers Biography - Brighton's Rock Legends

After a chance meeting between Mark Chadwick and Jeremy Cunningham in a Brighton pub, the pair decided to start a band, self-releasing their first two EPs on their own label, Hag. To complete the line-up, Charlie Heather joined as drummer, Alan Miles played harmonica and Jon Sevink the fiddle. Musidisc signed the act and produced their debut album A Weapon Called the World - after which Miles quit and was replaced by Simon Friend.

Their sophomore album, Levelling the Land, helped to bring the group to the mainstream and went certified gold, climbing to number 14 in the charts before eventually going platinum. Gigs at Glastonbury festival, travellers' sites and squats helped to seal their status as an act that represented the counter culture of the day, and they've retained these values ever since. Since their '90s heyday, the group have continued to produce music and experiment from their Metway Studios home in Brighton.
