Level 42 Biography - Celebrating More Than 35 Years in the Industry

Phil Gould, Mike Lindup and Boon Gould came together in 1979, before adding Mark King to the line-up after producers pushed for a vocalist to create a more commercial sound. Their eponymous first album was released in 1981 to a positive reception, and charted in the UK top 20. Single 'The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)' was their first top ten release in 1983, followed by the 1985 hit World Machine, and two years later they hit the top spot across Europe with 'Lessons in Love'. By this time, the band had moved away from their original jazz-funk sound towards a smoother pop and R&B feel, and that was widely viewed as a key contributing factor to their growing success.

After two further successful albums, Running in the Family and Staring at the Sun, both Gould brothers left the band to spend more time with their families. A quiet period followed with the new line-up only releasing two records in the early '90s, including Forever Now which enjoyed plenty of commercial success. Mark King went solo in the second half of the decade, so fans had to wait until late 2002 for the band to reform and play live together again. New material came in 2006 with Retroglide, their first official release together in 12 years, and multiple tours throughout the UK and Europe followed.
