Lenny Kravitz: Grammy Award-winning rock god
Growing up in Los Angeles with an actress mother and TV producer father, Lenny Albert Kravitz found himself surrounded by a cast of glittering family and friends. He joined the California Boys Choir as a child and decided to pursue a rock music career in high school after becoming obsessed with Prince; adopting the stage name 'Romeo Blue'. Wearing bright blue contact lenses and crafting a copycat funk sound, his impressionist style ultimately failed to attract the attention of label bosses.
Luckily, Kravitz decided to drop the Prince sensibilities for a back to basics approach, blending his love of funk with Zeppelin-esque classic rock. His vocal power and scorching guitar work attracted the attention of Virgin Records and he became a household name on both sides of the Atlantic after releasing his debut album Let Love Rule in 1989. Known for his retro look, Kravitz stacked up hit after hit and was one of the first to embrace new digital music technology in his 1998 smash hit "Fly Away", which was featured prominently in car and airline commercials. The success of the track earned him the first of four Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
