Wecker was born in 1947 in the city of Munich, and as the only child of a musical family with an opera singer as a father, he began taking piano lessons at age six. Throughout his education, he sustained an interest in history and philosophy but, after graduating, he immediately a pursued a career in music with his debut album "Die Sadopoetischen Gesänge..." in 1972. He established himself with the 1974 album "Ich lebe immer am Strand," but his breakthrough hit came in 1977 with "Genug ist nicht genug," launching a single of the same name that took the German-speaking world by storm. Wecker’s music has been celebrated for combining sophisticated lyrical content with musical accompaniment that is influenced by jazz, rock and folk—characteristics that have come to define the Liedermacher movement in German music. A voice for Germany
Alongside being one of the German-speaking world’s top singer-songwriters, Wecker has become known as a public figure and political activist. Uferlos, a semi-autobiographical novel he wrote in 1993, tells of his struggles with addiction, which is also the subject of many of his songs. In Germany, he is also known as a commentator on political and social issues and has written dramatic pieces, following the artistic path of his hero Bertolt Brecht. His role as a public figure has resulted in receiving awards including the Kurt Tucholsky Prize in 1995, the Erich Fromm Prize in 2007, and the University of Koblenz-Landau’s Thomas Nast Visiting Professorship in 2018. As the leading light of Liedermacher, he has defined the genre alongside the likes of Helene Fischer, Hannes Wader and Roland Kaiser.
