In the run-up to the release of their 2013 debut album, Youth and Young Manhood, the backgrounds of Caleb Followill (vocals, guitar), Nathan Followill (drums), Michael Followill (bass) and Jared Followill (guitar) were shrouded in mystery. There were rumours that their supposed backwater background in Nashville was a PR stunt in faux-authenticity, but it turned out that the band was the real deal, as highlighted in their 2011 documentary, Talihina Sky. Lumped into a media-lauded guitar revival scene on release, the band soon left their competition for dust, with subsequent albums Aha Shake Heartbreak and Because of the Times elevating them to arena level.
They've not let up since. 2008's Only by the Night, 2010's Come Around Sundown and 2013's Mechanical Bull have pushed their sound into more expansive territories as their ever-evolving fan base has swelled to make them one of the most successful bands on the planet. Most of the bands who came to prominence in the era NME dubbed the "new rock revolution" in 2003, have either faded away or split up, so the fact that Kings of Leon continue to demonstrate themselves as true rock titans, is all the more impressive.
