Fit for a Pope
Located on the south side of Glasgow, Bellahouston Park opened to the public in 1896. Three years later its owners added the city's second major golf course and following further expansions it soon became a popular events venue. In 1938 an astonishing 12.5 million people visited the park for the Empire Exhibition, an international exposition which took 14 months to stage. More than 200 pavilions and palaces were specially built for the event, of which the Palace of Art, now a Sports Excellence Centre, remains the only left standing. In 1978, the World Cross Country Championships came to Bellahouston Park, but it was the visit of Pope John Paul II four years later that put it firmly on the international map. 250,000 people flocked to the park on that occasion, then the biggest ever gathering in Glasgow's history. In 2010 Pope Benedict XVI became the second pontiff to visit the park with a mass celebrating the Feast of St. Ninian. You can both buy and sell Bellahouston Park tickets on StubHub.
