Joe Satriani Biography - Teacher Turned Guitar Master
Born in New York, this musician first picked up a guitar aged 14 after hearing of the death of Jimi Hendrix. Taught by jazz legends Billy Bauer and Lennie Tristano, he went on to become a teacher himself in the late '70s after moving to California. His students included Kirk Hammett of Metallica and David Bryson of Counting Crows, but a gradual shift away from teaching took place when the artist began recording his own music in the '80s. Sophomore album Surfing With the Alien being the first all-instrumental release to chart so highly in years, and in 1992, he released his most commercially successfully album The Extremist. Title track 'Summer Song' proved particularly popular after featuring in a major advertising campaign for Sony.
After a few years heading up the guitar trio G3, alongside Steve Vai and John Petrucci, Satriani continued to evolve musically, with Strange Beautiful Music in 2002 and Is There Love in Space? in 2004. By 2010 he was on to his 13th record with Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards, closely followed by a DVD release of his 3D concert film Saturated: Live in Montreal in 2012. He recently announced dates for his Shockwave World Tour, in support of his 15th album Shockwave Supernova which is promised to feature some teeth guitar playing magic.
