Jeff Wayne was originally inspired by H.G. Wells' history-making science fiction novel of the same name. During the '70s, this spark of inspiration manifested itself in a 1978 concept album named after the book. The re-telling combines progressive rock with a string orchestra and uses narration to help progress the story.

It quickly became a bestseller: enjoying success and critical acclaim across the globe with over 15 million records sold and spending over 330 weeks in the UK Album Charts, while spawning two international hit singles "Forever Autumn" and "The Eve of The War". It has been in the top 10 in 22 countries and number one in 11 of those.
