A historical glance at Blackpool Opera House
The original house, which opened in 1889, was designed by renowned architect Frank Matcham and housed a ballroom and theatre. Its inaugural performance was of Gilbert and Sullivan's opera "the Yeoman of the Guard". Due to high demand it was closed for reconstruction and reopened with increased seating (2,500 capacity) in 1910. This building would also be demolished for similar reasons and again rebuilt in 1938 as the structure we know today. Past events include FAME the Musical, Royal Variety Performance. In 2009, a second attendance by Queen Elizabeth II to a Royal Variety Performance event at this famed venue solidified its title as Her Majesty's Opera House.
