Echo and the Bunnymen Biography - Dark Rock Overlords
Led by supremely confident frontman Ian McCulloch, this influential group formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking part of their name from a drum machine named Echo. They soon replaced the trademark apparatus with real life drummer Pete De Freitas and soared into the UK charts with their debut album Crocodiles in 1980. Crammed full of expertly written songs, grandiose wailing and droning bagpipes, their darker first album Heaven Up There garnered an even bigger audience paving the way for their defining opus Porcupine, which hit Number 2 in the UK charts in 1983.
Singles like 'The Cutter' and 'The Back of Love' cemented their status as one of the greatest UK groups, and after several line-up changes the band has continued to retain status as one of the most popular bands to ever come out of Britain.
