Gorillaz: huge reord sales and a Guinness World Record
Formed as the brainchild of Blur's Damon Albarn and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett, the idea for the Gorillaz occurred when the two were watching MTV, with Hewlett commenting on the artists' lack of substance. Deciding with Albarn to create a cartoon band as a comment on this, the success of the Gorillaz was unprecedented. Releasing their eponymous debut album, Gorillaz, with tracks such as "Clint Eastwood", "19-2000" and "Tomorrow Comes Today", the album stood as proof of the band's rapid success, selling over seven million copies. Because of this, Gorillaz can boast an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records, earning the title of Most Successful Virtual Band.
Since then the band has gone to record a number of singles and albums that has kept the group relevant. With albums coming in the forms of Demon Days (2005), Plastic Beach (2010), The Fall (2011) and Humanz (2017), it's no surprise that fans everywhere are excited to see Gorillaz in 2018.
Gorillaz: alternative space provides another creative outlet for Albarn
After the roaring success of Gorillaz, the band's following album, Demon Days would grow to become the band's most popular album, featuring collaborations from De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird and MF DOOM, to name just a few, while the incredible Danger Mouse produced the album after Albarn personally brought into the project.
While Hewlett had plans to write a script for a possible Gorillaz film, Albarn was recording Think Tank with Blur, and when Albarn was finally free to begin work for Gorillaz the plan for a film was scrapped, with ideas translating over to the new album. While Blur's genre remained firmly in the realm of Indie, Gorillaz allowed Albarn to record other types of genre in pop, without alienating Blur's fanbase. Suffice to say, tracks such as "Feel Good Inc,", "Dare" and "Dirty Harry" all charted within the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart.
Similar artists to the Gorillaz
While virtual band's are few and far between, Damon Albarn stands as one of the most hardworking artists in the industry so if he isn't working with the Gorillaz or Blur, he's sure to be up to something. That being said, if you're a fan of the Gorillaz sound, check out Alt-J for more indie goodness.
