Beirut Biography – A Musical Trip Around the World
For a long time Beirut was the solo project of Zach Condon, the multi-instrumentalist born and bred in New Mexico. Dropping out of school at the age of 16, Zach Condon travelled the world with his older brother, picking up different music influences as he went along.
Exploring the traditions of Mexican funeral music and jamming with Serbian musicians in Paris made an everlasting impression on the young music whiz. When he finally returned to America, Zach Condon started to record Beirut’s debut album, The Gulag Orkestar, in his bedroom.
The Gulag Orkestar became the talk of the town in online music circles, and Zach Condon was soon approached by record label Ba Da Bing! In May 2006 The Gulag Orkestar had its official release, stirring up a minor storm in the industry. Due to the album’s success, Beirut saw a surge in concert dates, leading Condon to expand his one-man venture. Adding five more musicians to the line-up, the band Beirut was born and went on to tour the Northern hemisphere.
