Bad Manners: It's Good to Be Bad

The 1980s were a time of dayglo outfits, big hair, and high-energy tunes that still inspire people to dance along. This classic 80s band has not lost their touch throughout the years, and bring as much enthusiasm to the stage now as they did when they first hit the scene. Trivia

Band members have had a variety of "real world" jobs alongside other musical endeavours. Founding member Buster Bloodvessel owned and operated a hotel for two years in the late 90s. Trumpet player Paul Hyman worked in London's finance district. Original bass player David Farren now plays in a Rolling Stones tribute band, and drummer Brian Tuitt is active in Kent's open-mic nights.

Band

Bad Manners has been a revolving door of band members since its inception in 1979, but their sound has stayed consistent thanks to front man Buster Bloodvessel -- the only original member left in the group. The first member exodus occurred in 1986, but the band reformed and was back again with a brand new record, Return of the Ugly, in 1989.

Two years later, founding member Chris Kane left and the band's label, Blue Beat Records, folded. Undeterred, the band went on to release three more albums and are still delighting fans with their infectious tracks on their most recent tour.

Breakthrough

Magnet Records signed the band in the late '70s and by 1980 they were already fixtures on the UK's pop charts. The group continued to be a huge influence in both British and American ska music and claimed 12 hit singles through April 1983. 'Special Brew' and 'Can Can' both made it all the way to #3 in the UK, but their first two singles "Ne-Ne Na-Na Na-Na Nu-Nu" and 'Lip Up Fatty' -- both released in 1980 -- were on the charts the longest at 14 weeks each.

The band released several popular singles in the 90s and after the turn of the century, but none have had quite the success of the early days.

Hit Albums

Several albums were released under a variety of record labels, but none have done as well as the first three under Magnet Records' management. Both Ska 'n' B and Loonee Tunes! were released in 1980, and Gosh It's... Bad Manners came quickly after in 1981. All three were certified silver in the UK. Ska 'n' B features universal hits like "Monster Mash" and "Wooly Bully". Loonee Tunes! kept the band's pep and energy going all the way from the "Echo 4-2" to "Just Pretendin," and the last hit album featured "Walking in the Sunshine" and "Weeping and Wailing".
