'Champions of the World'
Formed in 1877, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC joined 11 other clubs 11 years later in the inaugural Football League season, competing in its first ever match against Aston Villa. They lifted their first major trophy, the FA Cup, in 1893, winning it again in 1908, and by the outbreak of World War II, they had established themselves as one of English football's premier sides. The club entered their golden age in the 1950s under former player Stan Cullis when they lifted three league titles, became the first English club to install floodlighting and were hailed as 'Champions of the World' after memorable victories over European giants Honved and Real Madrid. They also enjoyed considerable success under Bill McGarry in the 1970s, reaching the final of Europe's second-largest competition and lifting the League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City. Wolves nearly went under in the 1980s due to financial problems but started their road to recovery when lifelong fan Jack Heyward purchased the club in 1990. They eventually returned to the top flight in 2003 thanks to a playoff final win over Sheffield United. You can buy and sell Wolverhampton Wanderers tickets on StubHub.
The new, improved Wolves
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC spent the next decade yo-yoing between the top three divisions, winning a League One and two championship titles along the way. The club also welcomed numerous managers into the fold during this period, with former England boss Glenn Hoddle, one-time British transfer record signing Dean Saunders and their first ever non-British coach, Norwegian Stale Solbakken, all taking the reins at various points. Managed by former La Liga regular Nuno Espirito Santo and backed by a major Chinese investment group, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC returned to the Premier League in 2018. Captained by centre back Danny Batth, the team also boasted several internationals including Portugal's Euro 2016 winners Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho, Brazil's Leo Bonatini and Frenchmen Willy Boly and Sylvain Deslandes, as well as promising English youngsters Morgan Gibbs-White, Dominic Iorfa and Kortney Hause.
