The Carrow Road stadium was built in 1935 as a new home for Norwich City FC, whose existing ground, 'The Nest', had grown too small for the large crowds attending matches. Taking less than three months to build, the ground was opened with a match against West Ham United FC, which Norwich City won 4-3. At that time, the increased capacity of Carrow Road saw a new attendance record reached, a figure that was far surpassed in 1963 when Norwich City played Leicester City FC in front of a crowd of nearly 44,000 fans.
