Pioneering Punk Diva: Toyah
Expect the unexpected from punk pop diva Toyah. Her career as a musician and actress is still going strong after more than 30 years, and she's as passionate as ever. Make sure to get your Toyah tickets the next time she's playing in your area.
Schedule
Toyah's tour "Songs From The Intergalactic Ranch House" features music from her extensive back catalogue, including some songs that have never been performed live before. Venues include The Institute in Birmingham, Leeds University Union, the Classic Grand in Glasgow, Academy 3 in Manchester, Brighton's The Haunt, and the O2 Academy in Islington.
Trivia
In addition to making more than twenty albums, Toyah has also performed in many films and television programs. In recent years she's appeared in the racy series Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and she's done voice acting for hundreds of episodes of the thoroughly innocent Tellytubbies. In 2001, the University of Central England recognised Toyah's contribution to performing arts and broadcasting with an Honorary Doctorate.
Singer
To many, Toyah is most fondly remembered as a dramatic punk diva of the 1980s music scene, with brightly coloured hair and wild costumes. In the last 30 years, this singer and actress originally from Birmingham has released more than 20 albums and had 8 singles in the Top 40. She's also acted in dozens of stage plays, feature films and television programs, as well as working as a presenter. Somehow she also found the time to write two books. In 1977 she played the role of Mad in Derek Jarman's classic punk film Jubilee. That year she also formed the self-named band Toyah with guitarist Joel Borgen.
Breakthrough
By 1979, Toyah's acting career and her band were both doing well. Although the band was unsigned, thousands of people attended their shows. This led to a showcase for Safari Records, who released the six-track EP Sheep Farming in Barnet shortly after. The band's debut single "Victims of the Riddle" reached number one on the UK Indie Charts.
Hit Albums
By the time her band released the album Blue Meaning in 1980, Toyah had rejected the label punk as well as the aesthetic. That record reached the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart. Her 1981 album Anthem was her most successful so far, reaching number 2 in the UK Album Charts. Successful singles included the iconoclastic, fun and confident "I Want to Be Free." By 1981 the band Toyah broke up, but the singer continued to achieve success with new backing musicians. Her dramatic 1981 single "Thunder in the Mountains" reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart. In 1982 she released the dark and powerful album The Changeling, which reached number 6 in the UK Album Charts. She has also produced successful live albums including Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! (1980). Toyah has also released compilations of her singles and best of albums.
Show Experience
Toyah has always been known for her amazing wigs, makeup and costumes. Time hasn't diminished her flare, so expect plenty of daring fashion and high drama on stage. Toyah is always full of energy and loves to interact with a crowd, giving her audience a fun-filled night. Expect performances of her biggest hits like "Thunder in the Mountains" as well as forgotten gems from her 1980s pop album Minx, which have never been performed on stage before.
