The Offspring - Pretty Fly White Guys Still Going Strong
This Huntingdon Beach band released their debut single in 1986 on their own label, concentrating their sarcastic, often hilarious lyrics on personal relationships and the degradation of American politics. Within a couple of years, they had been snapped up by a small record company and were touring with other like-minded bands such as NOFX, Pennywise and Rancid, who shared their love of visceral, heavy meal inflected punk rock. The movement fast acquired a cult following, and The Offspring became one of the pioneering bands of the California's thriving second wave punk rock scene.
Although their early records helped them acquire a massive presence in the underground punk passage, their third album Smash (1994) went six times platinum and is counted as one of the most successful independent records of all time, cited as bringing punk pop to the mainstream. Tracks like 'Original Prankster', 'Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)' and 'Want You Bad' became stone cold classics across the globe, pushing albums like Americana (1998) and Conspiracy of One (2000) in the upper echelons of the charts. This brilliant band celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of Smash in 2014, and recent single 'Coming for You' shows they've lost none of their spiky appeal.
