The Cardigans: still touring and making music

Formed by guitarist Peter Svensson, bassist Magnus Sveningsson, drummer Bengt Lagerberg, keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson and lead singer Nina Persson in Jönköping, Sweden, in 1992, The Cardigans are one of Scandinavia's finest musical exports. 

The group's 1994 debut album Emmerdale earned them an immediate cult following in their home country, before second album Life (1995) took off across Europe and beyond; going Gold in the UK, Platinum in Sweden and twice Platinum in Japan. Their popularity continued to rise throughout 1996, with single "Lovefool" (taken from third album First Band on the Moon) was included in the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of Romeo + Juliet. Further singles "Erase/Rewind" and "My Favourite Game" (taken from Gran Turismo) were also strong UK hits. After a two-year hiatus the band returned recording and releasing their fifth album Long Gone Before Daylight (2003), before releasing Super Extra Gravity in 2005. The Cardigans returned to touring in 2012, and continue to regularly play to their army of fans.

The Cardigans: over 15 million records sold worldwide

Perhaps best known for their hit album First Band on the Moon and its lead single "Lovefool", The Cardigans spent an agonising eight nonconsecutive weeks at number two behind No Doubt's "Don't Speak" in the UK singles charts in 1996, while the album peaked at number 18.

More widely, "Lovefool" was a hit worldwide, particularly in the US and Japan, where the strength of the track helped First Band on the Moon reach platinum status in three weeks. Slant Magazine listed the song number 40 on its "100 Best Singles of the 1990s" list, while Pitchfork Media rated it number 66 on its "Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s". In a career now spanning over 25 years, the group have sold over 15 million records worldwide.
