B-52s Biography - Surf-Rock Protagonists
Originally built around the talents of brother-sister duo Ricky and Cindy Wilson, legend has it that the band came together after taking part in an impromptu musical session in a Chinese restaurant in the late '70s. Taking their name from a type of beehive hairdo, they set about combining dance and surf sounds with a classic rock 'n' roll aesthetic, putting out their debut single 'Rock Lobster' in 1978. Marked out for its unusual tuning, it was followed by a raft of hit singles throughout the 1980s, which built their following in Australia and New Zealand along with the US and UK.
A pivotal moment in their career came in 1989 with the release of their first million-selling single 'Love Shack'. A timeless party anthem, it cemented their position as one of the rock world's favourite groups and is stilled played today on movie soundtracks and radio stations. Meanwhile, albums such as Wild Planet and Good Stuff hit the Top 20 on both sides of the Atlantic, scoring the band multiple MTV Award nominations down the years.
