California-based alt-pop band Lany's synth-based beats, ethereal keyboards and smoky vocals could easily form the soundtrack for a teenage coming-of-age film. The band ultimately strives to create something new while also striking a familiar chord with its fans. Band

Lany (pronounced "lay-nee") consists of three friends who also happened to be neighbours in Nashville. The trio, Paul Klein, Jake Goss and Les Priest, met after Klein tried his hand at an unsuccessful solo career in Los Angeles. After moving back to Nashville to regain his footing, he connected with Goss and Priest, who initially played just for fun. Instead of getting their start as a garage band, Lany was actually created on synthesizers and a computer in a tiny bedroom. The close living, and working, conditions allowed the band to become close very quickly, which is reflected in the cohesiveness of their first recordings. Those initial jam sessions birthed two songs --"Hot Lights" and "Walk Away" -- that would eventually define their sound and become their breakthrough songs. The band's music is also inspired by movies, and they aim to have their music create a vivid soundtrack for their listener's lives. The genesis of the name comes from the band's love of acronyms (They even titled their debut EP with that moniker). Looking to the coasts of the US and then to the cities of Los Angeles and New York, they settled on the name Lany.

Breakthrough

Wanting to test the waters with the two songs created during their initial Nashville jam session days, Lany created a SoundCloud account, which gleaned only a few followers. Undeterred by the initial lack of online interest, the band continued promoting their work via social media. Quickly enough, "Hot Lights" and "Walk Away" garnered the attention of UK record execs. The band members initially thought someone was playing a prank on them, especially after their first experience with attracting attention seemed unsuccessful. However, the record label interest was real, and Lany recorded their first EP, a unique and catchy mix of dream-pop and R & B hooks, which makes it instantly recognizable.

Schedule

After touring the UK, Lany will head back to North America. True to their name, the band will play on both coasts of the US -- travelling between Los Angeles and New York City spreading their synth beats.

Show Experiences

Lany's live performances can make even a large venue feel like an intimate club, as you'll hear the band coaxing the crowd to sing along . They have also been known to take songs such as "ILYSB" and strip them down to their bare essentials, creating a moody and atmospheric sound that differs from the upbeat album version.
