Katatonia Biography - Awe and Anguish

Whilst death and doom sound like narrowly grim foci for a band's material, there are surprising shades of complexity to this Stockholm-born outfit's music. Originally a studio-based two-piece, the release of the genre-defining EP Jhva Elohim Meth...the Revival in 1992 saw the duo gain credibility in the underground scene, impelling them to expand the lineup. This success was closely followed by the highly successful Dance of December Souls, noted for heart-wrenching, despairing compositions that resonated with a niche audience. 1996 saw the release of Brave Murder Day, which saw lead singer Jonas Renke reign in his usually guttural vocals in order to protect his voice. This movement towards more a more melodic sound allowed the band appeal to a wider audience, causing many fans and critics to herald this record the band's magnum opus.

The now internationally-successful group has toured alongside other rock heavy-hitters including the Devin Townsend Project. Evolving their offerings has allowed the band to gain in popularity, with the musicians often embarking on worldwide tours to appease a still-avid fanbase.
